ACLS Refresher Course

  • Prerequisite
Candidate must be a healthcare provider (medical, nursing, paramedical or allied health professional) whose daily occupation or volunteer activities demand proficiency in the knowledge and skills or adult ACLS. Others may attend the course at the discretion of the course director. Candidates are required to read course materials before the class.

Candidates should have completed a Basic EKG course prior to registering for this course.

Candidates are encouraged, but not required to have successfully completed a BLS Healthcare Provider course within the past 2 years.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate proficiency in BLS CPR (including mouth to barrier device/mouth to mouth) repeatedly during the course. If unable to do so, the student may be remediated during the course until proficiency is achieved, or the student may be required to take a HCP course before proceeding with the ACLS course at the discretion of the course director.
  • Textbook
ACLS-AHA Textbook of Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Guidelines of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Care (JAMA, October 28, 1992) and the Emergency Cardiac Care Handbook for Algorithms and Drugs for BLS/ACLS/PALS and Neonatal Providers should be available to each candidate. 
  • Target Audience
Designed for healthcare professionals who are interested in learning knowledge and skills necessary to perform in the first 10 minutes of an actual resuscitation.
  • Content
The core of ACLS courses must be the evaluation and management of the first 10 minutes of a witnessed, adult, ventricular fibrillation (VP) cardiac arrest. This core content is listed in the textbook along with the ten core case scenarios.
  • Equipment
ACLS manikins, simulators, defibrillators, intubation heads, laryngoscopes and blades, airway supplies, AED, audiovisual equipment as necessary.
  • Successful Completion
  1. Attendance at all sessions of the provider course.
  2. A thorough knowledge of course content.
  3. A score of 85% or better must be achieved on the written test.
  4. Completion, to the satisfaction of the instructor, of the nine case scenarios and Megacode.
  • Criteria for Instructor Potential
  1. 92% or higher on the written evaluation.
  2. Demonstration of extensive knowledge as determined by the instructors of the course.
  • Cards
ACLS course completion cards may be issued only after the student has successfully completed all core skills and has demonstrated knowledge of core course content.
  • ACLS renewal
It is recommended that the renewal candidate participate in an AHA renewal course at least every 2 years. Renewal course may be independent from or attached to an ACLS course. Renewal courses should provide same course content and requirements necessary to complete the original course.
