PALS Instructor Course

  • Prerequisite
Each candidate must present a current PALS  course completion card from AHEC and documentation of Instructor Petential status.

Candidate must have letter from an Affiliate/Regional or Course Faculty member recommending that the candidate become an instructor.

Candidate must have a letter from a CTC coordinator indicating that the candidate will be registering with that CTC.

Candidate must possess a willingness and desire to teach in accordance with the scientific and program guidelines of the AHA.

Each candidate must make a commitment to teach two courses per year according to AHA guidelines.

  • Textbook
PALS-AHA Instructor's Manual for Pediatric Advanced Life Support and the AHA Textbook of Pediatric Advanced Life Support, along with Currents in Emergency Cardiac Care card. 
  • Target Audience
Designed for PALS providers interested in becoming instructors and demonstrating skills beyond that of providers.
  • Content
The course will cover how to instruct others in resuscitation skills and knowledge. Core content is contained in the course instructor manual.
  • Equipment
PALS manikin, introsseous model and  intubation heads, laryngoscopes and blades, airway supplies, AED, audiovisual equipment as necessary.
  • Successful Completion
  1. Attendance at all sessions of the instructor course.
  2. Satisfactory performance of lecture and skills presentation..
  3. A thorough knowledge of course content, including appropriate textbook and instructors manual.
  4. After successful completion of an AHA instructor course, the candidate must be monitored while teaching the first provider course. This must take place as soon as possible after the course. An instructor card will not be issued if monitoring takes place more than one year after the course. 

The instructor of this course will send a roster and signed acceptance of terms form for each student to the CTC upon course completion. A monitoring form for the first observed class should be sent to the CTC when the instructor card is released. 

  • Cards
Upon receipt of a completed monitoring form indicating successful completion of teaching the first provider class, an instructor card will be issued by the CTC with which the candidate registered.

The issue date of the card will match the date the candidate took the instructor course and the renewal date is December 2 years from the issue. There is no grace period for instructor recognition. The card is invalid after the date indicated on the card and the instructor may not participate in a renewal and will have to take the initial instructor course again. 

Note: a grace period of 90 days will be observed in even of illness, medical documentation will be required.

Instructor cards can be revoked for disregard of AHA policies, procedures or standards, or failure of an instructor to perform stated job responsibilities as documented.

Instructors will be traced when teaching provider courses and rotated through all case scenarios to ensure that they retain skills in all areas.

  • ACLS renewal
It is recommended that the renewal candidate participate in an AHA renewal course at least every 2 years. Renewal course may be independent from or attached to an ACLS course. Renewal courses should provide same course content and requirements necessary to complete the original course.
