PALS Provider Course

  • Prerequisite
Candidate must be a healthcare provider (medical, nursing, paramedical or allied health professional) whose daily occupation or volunteer activities demand proficiency in the knowledge and skills ofPALS. Others may attend the course at the discretion of the course director. Candidates are required to read course materials before the class.

Candidates should have completed a Basic EKG course prior to registering for this course.

Candidates are encouraged, but not required to have successfully completed a BLS Healthcare Provider course within the past 2 years.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate proficiency in BLS CPR (including mouth to barrier device/mouth to mouth) and FBAO skills repeatedly during the course. If unable to do so, the student may be remediated during the course until proficiency is achieved, or the student may be required to take a HCP course before proceeding with the PALS course at the discretion of the course director.

  • Textbook
AHA Textbook for Pediatric Advanced Life Suppport; Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Dardiac Care (JAMA, October 28, 1992) and the Emergency Cardiac Care Handbook for Healthcare Providers should be available to each candidate. 
  • Target Audience
Designed for healthcare professionals who are interested in learning knowledge and skills necessary to perform in the actual resuscitation of a child.
  • Content
The core of PALS courses must be the evaluation and management of a child in respiratory or cardiac distress.  This core content is listed in the textbook. All courses will include the scenarios from the textbook.
  • Equipment
PALS manikins, simulators, defibrillators, intubation heads, laryngoscopes and blades, airway supplies, AED, audiovisual equipment as necessary.
  • Successful Completion
  1. Attendance at all sessions of the provider course.
  2. A thorough knowledge of course content.
  3. A score of 85% or better must be achieved on the written test.
  4. Completion, to the satisfaction of the instructor, of the case scenarios.
  • Criteria for Instructor Potential
  1. 92% or higher on the written evaluation.
  2. Demonstration of extensive knowledge as determined by the instructors of the course.
  • Cards
PALS course completion cards may be issued only after the student has successfully completed all core skills and has demonstrated knowledge of core course content.
  • PALS renewal
It is recommended that the renewal candidate participate in an AHA renewal course at least every 2 years. Renewal course may be independent from or attached to an PALS course. Renewal courses should provide same course content and requirements necessary to complete the original course.
